Had a conversation this weekend about the limitations of the written word. It was pointed out to me the failing of email as compared to phone contact- the lack of discernable emotion.
I don't know about that.....In some cases, many cases actually, I think emotion can be made evident. You won't read it in the New York Times but give me a well-written novel any day. Poetry- come on! It can be and has been done! I've been wondering if this is part of the appeal of blogging- the challenge to present more than words, more than factual dry content, to stretch the capacity of the written word, to communicate fully without visual, aural, physical cues.
I'm not saying that I would choose electrical communication over face-to-face, or a written relationship over a personal one. I just mean that I can appreciate the challenge and potential of written words, be they by Keats or in a good blog post.
I also think there can be intuitive connections through written word, don't you? It doesn't always happen but I think I can tell when it does. Some things just seem so clear, like you can hear the voice of the individual, feel the breath as they write/speak. I've visited a site where psychics-in-training do practice readings over the internet. It sounds so cheesy to type that out but I've seen people make real connections there, and get/give accurate readings. I could hardly believe it at first. I used to look as this cyber connection we have over the internet as a barrier or a filter, now I'm not so sure it always is.
We have this amazing ability to adapt, to transcend, to work with what we've got. Isn't that part of the challenge, part of the fun of being in the world?

I think you’re absolutely right, every form of communication has it’s limits and benefits. I think an interesting thing with online communication is that since other’s words are being sub-vocalized (if you’re into that sorta thing) in “our own voice”, it can almost be more personal than a telephone conversation.
Whereas we may not understand the inflections and tones another uses to convey a concept, if we recognize the words and character, it can better be translated/read into a manner that we understand on a deeper level. Of course, it can be misinterpreted in the same way…it’s one of those things where it can just ‘click’ or not.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, sounds like an interesting conversation!
I agree with you about there being a lot of intuitive information in written communications… that there is a kind of energy “between the lines.” I am an intuitive counselor who does readings for people sight unseen, working with just a simple email and little else to go on… so I’ll agree with you that the cyber connection we have on the internet is not really all that much of a filter to those who are intuitively tuned in.
